In addition to reconnecting to the world outside the studio while traveling, exploring new ideas or problem solving, sketching provides invaluable information when working on a painting in the studio. I feel it is necessary to capture the spontaneity of a scene through a sketch so that I have a visceral connection to the experience and location. In combination with  photographs, the sketch evokes the experience of seeing and understanding the subject for the first time. I have filled close to 100 sketchbooks to date and am including examples, both from the sketchbooks and of studies and drawings on paper.
