The Missionaries

acrylic on canvas 36″ x 26″ 1989

During the 1980s, problems with chronic pain often made work untenable. As I drank spirts from the bottle while lying on a futon on my studio floor, I was visited on 3 occasions by 2 missionaries who seemed pleased to find a somewhat captive audience. I persuaded them to sit for a portrait which was a welcome diversion at the time. Note the low angle perspective reflecting the view I had during our exchanges from the floor. They confided in me on a subsequent visit that they had been admonished for allowing the portrait as it promoted vanity.
